Some people prefer to have their hair in low maintenance styles such as crew cuts and dreadlocks for a number of reasons. Depending on how you like to wear your hair you may require different products to keep it neat and tidy. The following information is about commonly used styling products for hair.
Hair Wax
Hair wax is a thick soap like substance containing wax. Hair wax was a product of ancient civilisation and was used primarily as a cleaning agent until many years later. Today hair wax is used as a styling agent, it is applied by hand to hair to create unique and exiting hair styles which sets firm to hold its style firm throughout the day.
Hair wax is made from natural ingredients including beeswax and aloe juice. The ingredients are boiled together to create a viscous form. As the mixture cools it hardens to make a wax that is great for sculpting and styling. There are many different recipes but the end effect is generally the same regardless of which product is used.
Hair Spray
Hairsprays main ingredient is a chemical polymer named elastesse, which is a liquid form of elastic. First invented and marketed in the 1950s under the trademark Spray Net, its popularity was immediate and revolutionised the hair industry. Hairspray is usually scented and comes in either pump or aerosol containers which spray the styling agent directly into the hair to hold it stiff and firm once the hair is styled. However hairspray is a weaker substance than its rival hair products (e.g. gel, wax, glue) and has to be applied more than once throughout the day to maintain its hold. Excessive use of hairspray or lack of washing each day may result in dull or damaged looking hair.
Hair Gel
Hair gel is another popular styling agent used all over the world (mainly by men) to stiffen and hold hairstyles in place throughout the day. Hair gel is a sticky substance sold in tubs or tubes and is applied to hair (wet or dry) by hand before being styled. The results are a strong and long lasting hold that gives hair a wet look that is stronger than hairspray, but weaker than that of hair glue or hair wax. Many brands of hair gel are sold in various strengths depending on how much hold you need.
