For hundreds of years, hairstyles have been a fashion statement by mostly women; recently within the last century male hairstyles have become more popular and just as varied as the female hairstyles.
Mullets (The Mullet)
The Mullet was a trend during the 1970s and 1980s. The mullet combines a very short front and side cut with or a without a fringe with a long back section that will hang down to the shoulders.
Mohican (Mohawk)
a traditional Mohawk also known as a Roosters Comb features a completely shaved head with just one centre strip of hair that extends from the front of the head down to the nape of the neck. The head was either shaved with razor blades or a clipper with no guard comb.
In 2001 and 2002 a modified Mohawk style named “the Faux Hawk” was created and evolved as a fashion statement for celebrities and sports stars.
Buzz cut
The “Buzz Cut” name derives from the sound of the electric clippers used to create the hairstyle.
A buzz cut may range from quarter of an inch down to complete stubble that is cut using the clipper without the guard.
Cornrows
Cornrows are a tightly woven form of braiding that have been in existence for hundreds of years. The cornrows have become wildly popular in modern times. Celebrities like “xzibit” – Pimp My ride (MTV) have been seen to fashion the cornrows style.
Dread locks
The style as dread locks also known as “dreads” or “dreds”. The basic style consists of matted and knotted strands of hair. Dreadlocks are known to have originated within the Rastafarian and African culture.
Afro
The Afro first appeared during the 1970s as a specific African American hairstyle, proudly adopted by both men and women.
Bowl cut
A cut that gets its name from the origins of placing a bowl on top of the head and then cutting off the hair that protrudes from beneath the bowl.
Waves
Popular today in the United States. The style is named for the natural pattern of tight waves. This trend is specific to African American men with there hair textures that tend to be tightly coiled.
Layered Cut
Style of having hair cut so that hair on different parts of the head is approximately even in length. This cut contrasts from tapered cuts and bowl cuts.
